Would it surprise you to learn that most of the buildings in the French Quarter are not French architecture? There was a huge fire in the city in 1788, and 4/5 of the city was destroyed. When it was rebuilt, the Spanish had taken control of New Orleans, and so the buildings were rebuilt in the Spanish style. It is still called the French Quarter because the people who lived there and the culture was still French.
In the French Quarter are several very old buildings of importance. The Old Ursuline Convent is the oldest building in the Mississippi River Valley. The Pontalba Buildings on either side of Jackson Square are considered to be the first apartments inAmerica. And Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre (The Little Theater) is the oldest continuously running community theatre in the United States. Bourbon Street is the home to many jazz clubs and is visited by tourists from all over the world.
